Frequently asked questions about search engine marketing

SEO and SEA work together for maximum visibility. In this FAQ, you will discover how Studio 84 combines both to help your business rank higher structurally.

Search engine marketing is an umbrella term for all marketing activities aimed at findability in search engines such as Google. It comprises mainly two pillars:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization, or search engine optimisation for organic - unpaid - results) and SEA (Search Engine Advertising, paid advertisements in search results).

So with search engine marketing, on the one hand you try to get your website to rank high in the regular Google results by optimising content and technology, and on the other hand you can use ads (e.g. Google Ads) immediately at the top for a fee. Together, we call this SEM. The goal is to get more relevant traffic from searchers to your website.

Studio 84 specialises in both sides. A thoughtful combination of SEO and SEA often gives the best results.

Briefly, the difference between SEO and SEA is: SEO is organic and basically costs no money per click, while SEA paid per click and delivers directly visible ads.

At SEO optimise your website (content and technical) so that search engines rank it high for certain keywords this is a slow process, but the clicks you bring in through SEO, you don't have to pay directly.

In SEA (such as Google Ads), you create ad campaigns and bid on search terms; your ad then appears above or below the organic results, labelled "Advertisement". You usually pay per click (Pay Per Click). The advantage of SEA is that it fast results. You can literally be at the top today. While SEO takes more time To climb.

On the other hand, once you stop paying with SEA, your visibility goes away, while good SEO results often last longer. Ideally, you deploy both: SEO for sustainable, cost-effective traffic in the long term, SEA to get immediate visibility on keywords that are important or as a supplement where SEO is not yet scoring.

Studio 84 has in-house experts who can make SEO texts score as well as manage SEA campaigns. This way, you get maximum return from search engine marketing.

Because almost everyone uses a search engine to find information, products or services. In Belgium, Google is by far the most widely used search engine. If your company is not visible there in relevant searches, you are potentially missing out on a lot of customers.

Search engine marketing ensures that you at the right time (namely when someone is actively looking for what you offer) comes into view. These are visitors with high intent, who are often further along in the buying cycle. Moreover, a high position in Google increases the credibility of your brand; people trust that the top results are the better or more relevant ones.

By investing in SEO, you build a steady stream of free traffic over the long term. By deploying SEA, you can tactically increase your visibility when it matters (for example, during a promotional period or for highly competitive keywords). In short, search engine marketing brings targeted traffic that tends to convert. For most companies, it is one of the most cost-effective ways of marketing.

Studio 84 values this so much that Bart, our founder, has been a search engine specialist since the early days (2000s). We use that experience to get clients to the top of the results, whether through organic optimisation or smart use of advertising budget.

Ideally, you don't have to choose strictly - SEO and Google Ads can reinforce each other. But if you have limited budget or resources, the choice depends on your goals and time horizon.

SEO or search engine optimisation is very interesting if you want a structural and long-term presence in search results without paying per click. It requires an initial investment (creating content, technical optimisation), but once you rank well, the traffic keeps coming in. It is especially effective for informative searches and to show expertise (via e.g. blogs, landing pages).

Google Ads (SEA) is useful if you want to generate traffic immediately or still rank at the top on very competitive keywords. You can also target very specifically (e.g. only locally, or at times when your business is open). The downside is that costs can add up and the effect stops as soon as you stop paying.

A good approach is often: work on SEO in the medium term (so you grow organically) and in the meantime, use Google Ads for direct leads/sales and to collect data (e.g. which search terms convert well?). You can then use that data in turn in your SEO strategy.

At Studio 84, we often combine both: we look at your current situation (are you already findable?), the competition and the nature of your business. We then propose a mix: for example, first a short Google Ads campaign to generate leads quickly and in the meantime optimise the website for SEO. Because we are a certified Google Partner since 2008 and experienced in SEO, we can advise very objectively what works best in your case.
