What is Google Ads?
Google Ads (formerly Google AdWords) is Google's advertising platform that allows you to advertise paid in Google search results and in the Google network. Businesses can use Google Ads to create ads that appear at the top or bottom of organic search results when people type in a particular search term. You will recognise them by the small "Ads" label. Besides search ads, Google Ads also includes display ads (banners on websites), YouTube video ads, Google Shopping ads (for online shops) and more.
It is an auction model: you choose keywords relevant to your products/services, and you determine the maximum amount you want to pay per click. When someone searches for that word, Google determines whether your ad will be shown and in which position, based on the bid and the quality of the ad.
Google Ads is so popular because you can target people who are already showing interest (after all, they are actively searching for the keyword).
How does Google Ads work?
Google Ads works mainly through a per-search auction. Advertisers choose keywords they want to be found on and create ads (with headings and description) for them. Every time someone uses such a keyword, you "compete" with other advertisers. Google looks at your bid (how much you are willing to pay per click) and a quality score (how relevant your ad and landing page are to the search term). Based on this, the ad position is determined. If your ad wins and is clicked, you pay an amount (often slightly less than your max bid).
In addition to search campaigns, in Google Ads you can also Display campaigns do, which are visual banners shown on all kinds of websites in the Google Display Network, usually useful for brand awareness or retargeting. There are also Shopping campaigns (with product images and prices, ideal for e-commerce).
Google Ads offers many targeting possibilities: you can target geographically (e.g. only Flanders), on specific times or days, on target group profiles, etc. The system is complex but powerful which is why specialists are needed. Studio 84 has a Google Ads Certified expert (Bart has been certified since 2008). We take care of the complete set-up: keyword analysis, writing attractive ads, setting up targeting and extensions (such as phone number display), and of course continuous optimisation once the campaign is running (such as excluding search terms, adjusting bids). This way, you get the maximum number of relevant clicks with minimal cost.
What does Google Ads cost?
Google Ads uses an auction system, so costs are variable. You pay per click (PPC: pay per click / CPC: cost per click). How much exactly depends on the competition for your keywords and the quality of your ad. Some niches have click prices as low as €0.20, while very competitive sectors (e.g. insurance, solar panels) can cost several euros to even tens of euros per click. You can set your own daily budget, e.g. €10 per day, and Google will try to generate as many clicks as possible within that.
The important thing is to work out what a click may cost you: if 1 in 10 clicks becomes a customer and a customer yields €100 profit, then a click may basically cost €10 to break even. In Google Ads, you constantly see what you spend and what it yields (measuring conversions is crucial).

How quickly will I see results with Google Ads?
Virtually immediately after your Google Ads campaign is launched, you can see results in terms of clicks and impressions. Unlike SEO, which can take months, Google Ads gives you the ability to appear at the top of search results within hours/days. This means that if you activate a campaign tomorrow, you can also get visitors to your site as early as tomorrow.
However, "result" also means conversions (e.g. leads or sales) and for that it is important that your campaign is set up properly. Often, the first week/weeks of a new campaign is a learning phase in which we collect data and make adjustments: which keywords perform best, which ads attract the most clicks, at what times of day does the traffic convert the most, etc. Through these optimisations, you will notice that the effectiveness of the campaign gradually increases.
But if your question is: Can Google Ads generate leads/turnover quickly? Yes, that is one of the biggest advantages. You don't have to wait for your organic rise; you can reach your target audience right away. Just make sure that your landing page (the page people get to via the ad) is user-friendly and invites conversion otherwise you'll be paying for clicks that yield nothing.
